The Primas project has the overall objective of promoting a more widespread uptake of inquiry-based learning in mathematics and science at both primary and secondary levels across Europe. The aims of this project in pursuit of this objective can be read here.

The project PRIMAS has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 244380

Across Europe there are calls to attract more students to mathematics and science: this is acknowledged as being of great importance for national economies and the position of the EU in relation to the rest of the world. As the rate of development of technology increases, we need to provide adequately prepared workers and citizens that are equipped with knowledge and skills that allow them to act in current society. However, although young people understand the importance of science and mathematics, they see careers in other sectors as being more attractive.

The PRIMAS partners have a vision of young people with curious and inquiring minds, who are intrinsically eager to extend their knowledge of mathematics and science. We are currently contacting and supporting teachers who wish to join our mission and want to ensure that experiences in learning mathematics and science reflect the exciting and dynamic world that young people live in. This will raise their interest in and motivation for science and mathematics and will encourage further education in these disciplines.

We support teachers to develop their students’ inquiry skills in mathematics and science. We provide professional development materials to explore effective teaching methods as well as classroom materials for direct use by students. We ensure that teachers are also supported indirectly through our work with a wide range of stakeholders such as parents and policy makers.

The project will achieve its aims over four years (2010 - 2013) bringing together educational expertise from 14 institutions across 12 European nations. For contact information, see here.
